8 Tips to Hide The Bride's Pregnancy at The Hen's
4 weeks before my bachelorette party I took a pregnancy test and to my surprise it came up with two lines on it.
"Hello little love, I'm your mummy! Not great timing kiddo. I've got my hen's night, wedding, and honeymoon coming up and I was planning on being really drunk for all of them! Like... really really drunk. That's ok though... I'll stop drinking for 9 months, because I really really love you...even though I only found out about you a few minutes ago. Best friends look after each other, and we're going to be best friends. Deal?"
I fell pregnant about 12 weeks before my husband and I had decided we were going to start "trying". Translation: I fell pregnant 12 weeks before my wedding day. It was too early for hubby and I to officially announce the pregnancy, but since my bride tribe all knew that I love a drink (or two, or twelve) there was absolutely no way that I was going to be able to hide my bun filled oven from my lady loves, so I didn't. I spent my hen's party pulling my friends aside one by one, and telling them I was pregnant and enjoyed the excitement in their eyes and their squeals.
Since then I've had time to think (about 4 years) and have now come up with a plan for hiding the pregnancy. You'll need to involve your bridesmaids, but you should be able to hide it from everyone else.
1. Host the Party In A Home
It's the external factors which prevent you from being able to keep the pregnancy secret. Having the party in a home means that you can control the environment more easily.
2. Pre-Plan a Pregnancy Friendly Menu
If everything on the menu is pregnancy friendly then you won't get caught out avoiding certain foods. Plus, your other pregnant friends will love you for it!
3. A Special Cocktail for the Bride
Pre-made mocktails need to be ready and waiting for the bride to be, and they need to look nearly identical to a cocktail you are serving. The bridesmaids should make sure the pregnant bride's glass is almost always full, preventing other guests from "topping up" with real alcohol.
4. Substitute Champagne
Adore Tea Gold Creek sell Turkish apple iced tea, and it looks EXACTLY like champagne and tastes delicious. If you're really clever and organised, put the iced tea into a champagne bottle. It will completely throw your guests off the trail.
5. The Designated Drinker
Should a friend with good intentions give you a drink, say thankyou and hold onto it. When that friend is no longer paying attention, your designated drinker can steal the drink away from you and consume it (no need to let a delicious drink go to waste!)
6. Tell Your Entertainers
Depending on the type of entertainment you are having at your party, you may need to pre-warn them of the secret. I've seen caterers, waitresses, and pamper service providers all accidentally make an announcement. Talk to them beforehand and make sure it is clear that the bride is pregnant, and that it's SECRET.
7. Your Bridesmaids Need to Pay Attention
Conversations can easily end up leading to a pregnancy announcement. Bridesmaids need to pay attention and change the subject at the first sign a conversation could lead to baby talk. If the bride is anything like me, her face will give up the game long before her voice does.
8. Progressively Appear to Get More Tipsy.
This should be simple enough. you've been drunk before! gauge how drunk you should be on the actions of your guests.
Lastly, and most importantly... Be ok with the news coming out
The more relaxed you are about the news coming out, the less likely it is that your friends will pick up on your stress vibes and work it out. The people you have invited to celebrate with you, are the same people you would go to, and confide in, if something went wrong in the pregnancy. Know and trust that your tribe are all there to support you and you baby bun.
